A cocaine brick pulled from the waters near Big Pine Key in the Florida Keys illustrates how illicit drug smuggling can masquerade as local “square grouper” fishing. Lobster divers recovered the plastic-wrapped package about 30 miles northeast of Key West this summer and, after failing to find sheriff’s deputies, left it on the hood of a fire-rescue ambulance. The brick was marked with “With God” in Spanish and religious imagery. Federal prosecutors say boat builder John Strama, 44, used local knowledge of waterways, tides and currents to target similar cocaine bricks and led a ring that has been sentenced to prison. Prosecutors noted cocaine has resurged globally, with packages surfacing nearly every week, while an order of Caribbean strikes is viewed as unlikely to drive more contraband drifting toward the Keys.
