Angling and Donuts 'moves upriver'
Angling and Donuts 'moves upriver' as a community fishing initiative expands attention to the Whetstone Brook and local floodplain restoration areas. The event, run by the Connecticut River Conservancy, has been held in Brattleboro for about five years, according to Kathy Urffer, director of policy and advocacy. She said organizers wanted to highlight the brook’s trout fishery and inform residents about recreational access linked to restoration sites. Urffer also pointed to environmental work: a dam at the mouth of the Saxtons River, removed about two years ago, supports sea lamprey and other fish migration upstream. She described a safer recreation path created after the dam removal. In Brattleboro, hosted on Birge Street the week before, the event has grown yearly, drawing participants including families and groups such as Trout Unlimited, local bakeries and the Water Way(s) Project.
