Aquamarine' Pilot Based On Movie Ordered By Disney+; Emma Roberts To Reprise Role & Exec Produce
Disney+ ordered a pilot for Aquamarine, based on the 2006 teen fantasy romantic comedy starring Emma Roberts, expanding the franchise to series television. The project is developed for Disney+ and Disney Channel, produced by Susan Cartsonis and directed by Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum, who also returns as an executive producer. Sarah Watson, creator of The Bold Type, will write the pilot, and Roberts will reprise her role as Claire Brown as a guest star. The pilot follows Coral, a teenager who moves to a seaside town and uncovers the truth behind her mother’s disappearance, learning her mother was a mermaid and awakening magical powers as secrets beneath the waves threaten to surface. The 2006 film, directed by Allen Rosenbaum from a screenplay by John Quaintance and Jessica Bendinger, was loosely based on Alice Hoffman’s 2001 YA novel and starred Roberts, Joanna “JoJo” Levesque, and Sara Paxton.
