Argentina produce epic World Cup fightback to beat Egypt, reach quarters
Argentina produced an epic World Cup fightback to beat Egypt 3-2 and reach the quarter-finals after trailing 2-0 on Tuesday in Atlanta. Lionel Messi helped spark the comeback following goals from Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Ziko for Egypt, including a penalty saved from around Messi. Cristian Romero’s header ignited the revival as Argentina scored three times in the final 11 minutes plus stoppage time. Messi equalised for his ninth consecutive World Cup match and returned to the Golden Boot lead with eight goals. Enzo Fernandez completed the turnaround with a header two minutes into stoppage time. Egypt’s Mostafa Shoubir made several key saves, while the match also included controversial VAR decisions and a red card for a member of the coaching staff after the winner. Argentina will face either Colombia or Switzerland on Saturday.
