Arkansas Outdoors: State teems with fishing, camping opportunities | Arkansas Democrat Gazette
Lake Dardanelle is repeatedly rated as one of Arkansas' top bass fisheries by recreational anglers and national tournament groups, underscoring the state's strong fishing culture. Recent rains have left rivers in prime condition for paddling and float fishing, and summer invites extended exploration paired with camping. With early morning and late evening fishing peaks, daytime hours are available to visit nearby towns and attractions. Lakes and rivers across the state offer camping facilities that provide access to a wide range of activities, particularly around Hot Springs and Northwest Arkansas. Hot Springs benefits from nearby Lakes Ouachita and Hamilton, both offering diverse catches such as largemouth bass, spotted bass, striped bass, white bass, hybrid bass, walleye, crappie, bream and catfish. Bobby Dennis, a Hot Springs lure designer, calls Lake Hamilton one of the nation's finest big-bass lakes, noting bass around the 10-pound range and a spring entry to the Legacy Lunker Program. Ouachita's scenery and campgrounds are renowned, especially along the south side with RV and car sites, water and electrical hookups, restrooms and boat ramps near U.S. 270; the region also offers the Ouachita Trail, Garvan Woodland Memorial Gardens, and nearby DeGray Lake as part of the Diamond Lakes.
