Army Eyes G/ATOR Missile Killing Radar as Marine Demand Surges
xCruzo Brief
The U.S. Army is showing interest in Northrop Grumman’s AN/TPS-80 Ground/Air Task Oriented Radar (G/ATOR) as Marine Corps demand accelerates. The 9,000-pound system can be carried on C-130 Hercules or MV-22 Osprey aircraft and emplaced by a four-person crew in under ten minutes. Northrop says it has delivered 43 of 60 G/ATOR units ordered by the Marine Corps, with five designated for the Air Force and one for Navy test and evaluation. An extended-range software update last year improved identification of friendly aircraft and adds capability for varying threat environments. Northrop is also already engaging the Army on employment concepts.
