Army's most powerful tank gets a $43M production boost

The Army awarded General Dynamics Land Systems a $43.5 million contract modification to support M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams production through January 31, 2028. The SEPv3 is the most advanced Abrams variant in production, featuring an under‑armor auxiliary power unit and a generator for electronics to cut fuel use and heat signatures. Other upgrades include a Vehicle Health Management System, updated communications, a faster fire-control system, an ammunition data link for programmable rounds, enhanced counter-IED armor, improved long- and mid‑wave thermal imaging, and a low‑profile remotely operated weapon station. The Abrams measures about 9.7 meters long, 3.7 meters wide, and 2.4 meters high, with a crew of four, under the base contract W56HZV-24-F-0149 (P00006). Detroit Arsenal manages the program, with work directed by orders rather than fixed sites. The broader program began with a 2020 award valued at billions and supports export customers as well.
