Boaters Stumbled on a Great White Devouring a Whale off Rhode Island
Boaters off Rhode Island captured footage of two great white sharks feeding on a whale carcass floating near Block Island. The Fleet RI spotted the dead whale during a return trip from the Northeast Canyons, about eight miles off the state’s coast. Ian Shilosky recorded a viral video showing the sharks’ behavior, with the first great white appearing curious around the nearby boat while the second focused primarily on feeding. The Atlantic Shark Institute documented the sighting and noted the possibility of shark arrivals even from miles away. The article says great white sightings are consistent with known migration patterns and are especially active in summer and fall. It also emphasizes that great whites showed little interest in people on nearby boats, and unprovoked shark attacks in Rhode Island are extremely rare.
