Bombshell Report Exposes LA's Worsening Homelessness Crisis reports new data showing Los Angeles County’s homelessness situation increasing again. The estimate rose 1.2 percent from the previous year to 73,040 people countywide, which includes 85 cities, according to the report cited by the Wall Street Journal. Within the city of Los Angeles, homelessness climbed 3.4 percent to an estimated 45,194 residents, while unsheltered homelessness grew 3.3 percent countywide and surged 7.9 percent in the city. The report also says the number of people in street encampments or vehicles increased. It notes Mayor Karen Bass’s motel-room program spent $82,420 per year per person housed, but nearly 40 percent later returned to the streets. Officials attributed the slowdown to fewer people entering shelters, reduced funding, and a shortage of affordable housing, while Bass pointed to cuts and rising costs. She cited a 50 percent reduction in state HHAP funding from $1 billion to $500 million, causing a $70 million impact on Los Angeles, and said the city later raised philanthropic dollars, restoring funding to $900 million.
