Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye on target as Switzerland end Algeria World Cup hopes
Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye scored as Switzerland ended Algeria’s World Cup hopes with a 2-0 win in Vancouver to secure a place in the last 16. Switzerland controlled the match throughout and opened the scoring after 10 minutes. Ramiz Zerrouki’s early penalty appeal for Algeria was dismissed, and the North Africans struggled to build meaningful chances. The first goal came when Johan Manzambi broke down the left and picked out Embolo, whose finish was described as straightforward for the Rennes striker. After halftime, Algeria’s start worsened when their defense failed to handle Embolo’s cross, allowing Nottingham Forest’s Ndoye to score from the edge of the area past Luca Zidane. Riyad Mahrez was denied by a last-ditch tackle, while Switzerland went closest again through Fabian Rieder and Denis Zakaria before Zidane made late saves. The win was Switzerland’s first World Cup knockout victory since 1938.
