Cadillac Mountain, a missing Wabanaki marker and the fight over what national parks should tell

At Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park, visitors can no longer see a summit sign that explained the mountain’s sacred significance to the Wabanaki people. The marker was removed as part of an effort described by the National Parks Conservation Association as part of the Trump administration campaign to strip parks of materials considered disparaging to U.S. history. The Wabanaki Confederacy, present for more than 10,000 years in the region, has long viewed the peak—known as Wapuwoc, or “white mountain of the first light”—as a dawnland gathering place. Wabanaki leaders and former officials say removals erode long-built trust, while some signs also addressed topics like climate change and precipitation trends.
