California boater dies after leaping off vessel into Shasta Lake to save his beloved dog

A 60-year-old man from Redding, California, died after jumping into Shasta Lake to rescue his dog, according to the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office. Geordan White was aboard a boat Friday morning when his pet entered the water. Around 9 a.m. near the Bailey Cove Boat Launch, a 911 caller reported White began struggling after entering the lake. The caller tried to help by throwing a flotation device, but White couldn’t keep hold and disappeared underwater. A dive team later recovered his body. An autopsy is expected to determine the cause of death. The dog survived, and the department urged boaters to wear personal flotation devices.
