Cambodian farmers, exporters thrive as direct longan trade with China booms
Cambodian farmers, exporters thrive as direct longan trade with China booms reports how Cambodia’s fresh longan sector is stabilizing after direct exports to China began. In Pailin, Sen Sokhoeun, a 16-hectare longan farmer, said prices have held steadier since direct exports started in October 2022, avoiding the sharp declines seen in previous peak seasons. With harvest beginning next month, she is already being visited by company representatives to secure fruit for export to China. Sokhoeun said China’s large-volume purchases at favorable prices encourage farmers to expand cultivation and protect incomes, noting that without the Chinese market, low prices could force growers to cut trees for firewood. The article says China Jinkwoayuan Import Export (Cambodia) Co Ltd. exported 18,000 tonnes of fresh longans to China last year and plans to raise annual volume to 30,000 tonnes. Cambodia cultivates more than 13,600 hectares of longans, mainly in Pailin, Battambang and Banteay Meanchey.
