Candlewood Lake has been generating power -- and fun -- for nearly 100 years

Candlewood Lake, the largest lake in Connecticut and a popular summer destination in upper Fairfield County, has been generating hydroelectric power for nearly a century. The Candlewood Lake Authority, created in 1972, monitors the multi-municipal lake that borders New Fairfield, Danbury, Brookfield, Sherman, and New Milford. The Authority’s newly introduced research vessel, docked in New Fairfield, is equipped with sonar and other technology intended to improve safety and cleanliness. The article also highlights the lake’s man-made origins: the project began after approval in 1926, with the “big, beautiful battery” completed in 1929. FirstLight has managed operations since 1999.
