Captain describes haunting scene where boat sank near Alcatraz with 20 on board

A captain described a distressing scene after a boat sank near Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay on Tuesday with 20 people on board. Witnesses said some victims swam for their lives, while others may have been trapped inside the large cabin cruiser as it sank about 130 feet down. The U.S. Coast Guard said the group was taking part in a celebration-of-life memorial when rough seas and powerful waves capsized their vessel at 3:20 p.m. At the time authorities stopped searching on Wednesday night, one victim identified by the San Francisco Office of the Chief Medical Examiner as Clifford Joseph Boisa, 79, had died, 16 passengers were rescued, and three remained missing. The 49-foot-long boat, Volare, was based out of Stockton. Captain James Smith said only about half the victims had life jackets and that he saw people clinging to the hull, with steam reported instead of smoke.
