Captain describes haunting scene where boat sank near Alcatraz with 20 on board
A boat capsize near Alcatraz in San Francisco Bay left 20 people aboard and triggered a large-scale Coast Guard and fire response Tuesday. Witnesses reported that some victims swam for their lives, while officials said others may have been trapped inside the enclosed cabin cruiser as it sank about 130 feet to the bay bottom. The incident occurred at 3:20 p.m. Tuesday in rough seas near the island during a celebration-of-life memorial gathering, according to U.S. Coast Guard officials. One victim, Clifford Joseph Boisa, 79, of Sutter County, was identified by the San Francisco Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, and 16 passengers were rescued. Three people remained missing as of Wednesday night, after search efforts were suspended. The 49-foot vessel, Volare, was based out of Stockton; the Coast Guard said steam, not smoke, was seen amid earlier fire concerns, and cold water hampered conditions.
