Captain 'misread' runway in airport overrun
A serious incident at Guernsey Airport in April 2024 involved an Aurigny passenger flight that overran the runway after the captain “misread” its perspective. Investigators said the Gatwick-to-Guernsey aircraft attempted a “gentle touchdown” while failing to account for the runway slope, leaving it short on stopping distance. The plane came to rest about 30m (98ft) beyond the paved surface, and the AAIB reported no injuries and no damage to the aircraft. After the event, Aurigny and the aircraft’s lessor updated their safety management systems, and Aurigny required one of its training captains to observe crews at the start of any new wet-lease operations. The AAIB’s sole formal safety recommendation targeted De Havilland Canada, asking for improved access to emergency checklists in the quick reference handbook. The Channel Islands regulator also introduced enhanced reviews for some wet-lease permits.
