Charity celebrates five years tackling FGM and supporting survivors
Women of Grace UK, an Essex-based charity supporting women and girls, marked five years of work with a special anniversary conference aimed at empowering women and tackling harmful practices including female genital mutilation (FGM). The event took place at the Novotel Hotel and drew guests from across Essex and beyond, including Susie Dutton, councillors, police representatives, safeguarding teams, and healthcare professionals. It included councillor Richard Bower and representatives from national organisations and community groups. Speakers discussed women’s health, safeguarding, and violence against women and girls, while survivor advocates emphasized safe, supportive environments. A highlight was the launch of new research on safe spaces for survivors, led by Rev Valerie Lolomari MBE with Dr Emmaleena Kakela. The study found that safe spaces help survivors heal, regain confidence, access support networks, and build community leadership. The charity also outlined plans for a dedicated community centre in Essex, offering permanent support services and training.
