Claremore Lake fishing derby draws more than 200 kids

Claremore Lake’s annual Kids Fishing Derby drew more than 200 children on Saturday, bringing families together for a day focused on fishing, prizes, and outdoor activities. Organizers said each participant received a free fishing rod, reel, and bait, with competitions held throughout the day across categories tied to the biggest fish, longest fish, and shortest fish. The derby also included prizes for those categories as kids fished. Claremore City Manager John Fery said the event highlights families spending time outdoors and kids engaging with their hands rather than indoor entertainment. The event is designed to introduce children to fishing while offering a free community activity for summer.
