Clean, Drain, Dry Is Texas Law -- Not A Suggestion -- And Fines Can Hit $500 Per Violation
Texas is emphasizing that its Clean, Drain, Dry boating rule is mandatory, not optional, and that fines can reach $500 per violation. Texas Parks and Wildlife officials warned that invasive aquatic species continue spreading across the Lone Star State, often hitchhiking on boats, trailers, anchors, and even small amounts of water left onboard. The guidance requires boaters to clean off plants, mud, and debris; drain all water from boats and onboard containers before traveling to another freshwater body; and dry equipment thoroughly once home. The message highlights zebra mussels and giant salvinia as major threats, noting that zebra mussels can attach to infrastructure and damage equipment while giant salvinia can rapidly form thick mats that impede boating and fishing. Officials stressed that transporting prohibited invasive species can trigger penalties.
