Coast Guard rescues teen after 2 Days clinging to capsized Alaska boat

A 16-year-old boy identified by family as Derek Parker Aghnaanga was found alive on September 7 after about two days clinging to an overturned 18-foot fishing skiff in Alaska’s Bering Sea. He was suffering hypothermia when a passing fishing vessel and Coast Guard aircrew located him roughly four miles east of St. Lawrence Island. Two other people on the boat died: Sidney Kulowiyi, 35, and Barton Rookok, 34, both from Savoonga. The skiff overturned on the night of September 5, with poor weather delaying searches until the morning of September 7. Water temperatures were near 50°F (about 10°C).
