Coast Guard suspends 10-day search for 9 missing boaters near Micronesia

The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended its 10-day search for nine people reported missing aboard a 20-foot skiff near the Federated States of Micronesia. The effort covered more than 33,000 square miles and ended Sunday, according to Coast Guard Forces Micronesia/Sector Guam and a Tuesday news release. The vessel was reported overdue July 31 after failing to arrive at Ruo Island, about 625 miles southeast of Guam and 70 miles north of the Chuuk Islands. Coast Guard Lt. Adeeb Ahmad said the active search was suspended, while assets involved included the cutter Vincent Danz (newly based in Guam), aircraft from Air Station Barbers Point, Kadena, and Andersen, and Navy and commercial vessels via AMVER.
