Coast Guard suspends search for 3 missing boaters in San Francisco Bay: "It was like Titanic in real life"
The U.S. Coast Guard suspended the search for three missing boaters in San Francisco Bay near Alcatraz at sunset Wednesday. The agency said one additional person died shortly after being pulled from the water, bringing the known fatalities to at least one. Coast Guard Commander Jarod Toczko told reporters crews covered more than 950 square nautical miles and 1,700 miles of track line over 23 hours, but were unable to locate any survivors within the search area. The Volare, a 49-foot cabin cruiser carrying 20 people, capsized Tuesday afternoon about 600 yards from Alcatraz after a trip under the Golden Gate Bridge and to Angel Island while heading back to San Francisco’s Marina Yacht Harbor. The man taken aboard a rescue boat was later pronounced dead; the medical examiner identified him as 79-year-old Clifford Joseph Boisa. Authorities say 13 others reached shore, three were hospitalized for impact injuries and released, and the onboard dog also died.
