Coastguard suspends search for missing pair after fishing boat sinks

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) has suspended the search for two missing crew members after the French fishing boat The Maranello sank in the English Channel, though three other sailors were rescued. The effort was halted “pending further information” after the crew members were described as “unaccounted for.” The survivors, who were taken to hospital after being rescued on Saturday, are now traveling back to France. The search began south-west of Eddystone Lighthouse, off Plymouth, following a distress call. French authorities said The Maranello had contacted a second trawler, The Stradale, which recovered three of the five crew before the Maranello sank. Rescue assets included a Coastguard helicopter, fixed-wing aircraft, RNLI lifeboats from Falmouth and Plymouth, and a French Falcon 50.
