Connecticut fisherman thought he saw a dolphin. It was a hammerhead shark

A Windsor Locks resident, Joshua Enman, said he initially thought he saw a dolphin while fishing off Connecticut’s coast on Monday, but the “fin” turned out to be a hammerhead shark. Enman, 37, was fishing for small fluke off Black Point in Niantic Bay after launching from the Connecticut shoreline with friends on a boat. He recorded the encounter on video after noticing the animal’s appearance near his vessel. Enman said the shark came around the front of the boat, appeared to “take his face out of the water,” then slapped the boat’s side and dove away. Connecticut DEEP fisheries biologist David Molnar said smooth hammerhead sightings are rare in Long Island Sound—only five reports have been logged in two years—and urged boaters to report sightings and release sharks unharmed.
