Crews tackle barn fire involving 100 tonnes of hay

Crews tackled a barn fire in Dorset after a deep-seated blaze erupted in a building storing 100 tonnes of hay, along with tyres. Firefighters were called to Cards Mill Lane in Whitchurch Canonicorum, near Bridport, shortly after 12:00 BST on Thursday. Teams from Charmouth and Bridport, plus a water carrier from Danes Castle in Devon, worked to prevent flames spreading to the roof and to a neighbouring barn. Farmers moved cattle to safety and used a telehandler to shift hay bales out of the structure. Relief crews from Dorchester, Weymouth and Lyme Regis took over at 17:30, with operations continuing into the evening.
