Crucial' Newlyn marine skills centre opens to train fishers
A new Newlyn Marine Skills & Resource Centre has officially opened in Cornwall to train and retain workers for the region’s marine sector, reinforcing workforce capacity for the fishing industry. The hub is located on The Strand in the heart of Newlyn’s fishing port, and Seafood Cornwall Training will deliver qualifications and courses for both new and experienced fishers. Fisheries regulators and marine scientists will also be based at the centre. Harbour master Jonathan Poynter said the partnership with the Town Deal Board and Cornwall Council allowed the project to be created faster than it would have been independently. The opening positions the facility as a dedicated location for skills development tied directly to local port operations. It also aims to support the long-term future of Cornwall’s seafood and marine workforce.
