Cycling safety: UCI set to introduce trackers at pro races

The UCI has proposed adding GPS trackers to all pro road cycling races to pinpoint riders’ locations in real time. The move follows the death of British rider Fin Tarling after a collision during the Volta a Portugal, when a van strayed onto the course while he was riding alone. At a meeting at UCI headquarters in Aigle, Switzerland, the Professional Cycling Council stressed the need for a dedicated safety system, starting with UCI World Tour and UCI Women’s World Tour events. Trackers were already used at last year’s Road World Championships in Kigali after Muriel Furrer’s death in 2022. Tarling’s crash remains under investigation in Portugal.
