Day 5: How Rescuers Scour Sunda Strait for Missing Journalists

Joint search and rescue teams expanded their sweep in the Sunda Strait on Saturday, entering day five for five journalists and three crew members missing at sea. The group lost contact on Monday, September 7, 2026, around waters near Mount Anak Krakatau, and the search is now split into multiple maritime and aerial sectors. Banten SAR head Al Amrad said the maritime operation covers roughly 2,537 square nautical miles across sectors T, U, Z, W, X and Y, with additional aerial sweeps under Sector H covering about 2,063 square nautical miles. Rescuers are using vessels including KRI Kerambit and KAL Pahawang, plus an HR-3604 helicopter and thermal drones.
