Dead and 3 missing after boat carrying mostly family members sinks near Alcatraz Island
Dead and 3 missing after boat carrying mostly family members sinks near Alcatraz Island describes a fatal incident in San Francisco Bay, where a pontoon boat sank Tuesday afternoon while carrying mostly family members for a memorial service. Authorities said 16 people were rescued and one person died; three others were initially listed as missing before witnesses prompted an update confirming three missing. San Francisco Fire Chief Dean Crispen said responders found a three-deck vessel almost fully underwater near Alcatraz, with the motor running and fuel leaking. The search for missing people was expected to continue all night on the western side of the Golden Gate Bridge, using divers, helicopters, and vessels. Injuries from falls were treated at hospital, and Crispen said three injured people were expected to be released Tuesday night. Officials said there was no evidence the sinking began as a fire. A dog onboard also died.
