Deaths, Injuries Reported After Fire at CFB Wainwright, Alberta
Canadian authorities reported deaths and injuries Saturday after an incident triggered a large fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta, one of Canada’s busiest military installations. Defense Minister David McGuinty confirmed the incident occurred at the base and said officials had not yet released the number of people killed or hurt. He added that the blaze was still active Saturday evening and said he could not recall an incident of that nature recently. The municipality of Wainwright reported that flames moved beyond the base’s boundaries into nearby areas, but local authorities said no evacuation orders were issued despite the spread. Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith commented on the situation through posts on X. The Canadian Armed Forces, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and local emergency crews were responding. McGuinty said federal agencies were coordinating with Alberta and municipal governments, and authorities had not determined what caused the incident.
