Dockworkers stage international strikes to denounce arms shipments and demand better conditions
Dockworkers across Europe and beyond staged international strikes Friday, unions said, targeting arms shipments and demanding better working conditions while calling for an end to wars in the Middle East, including Gaza. A joint statement demanded that ports not be used to transport weapons, ammunition, military equipment or troops, with organizers saying more than 100 ports in multiple countries joined. In Greece, the ENEDEP union called for a strike at Piraeus. Additional disruption came from a separate seafarers’ strike, leaving ships docked and affecting ferry services. In Turkey, protesters gathered at Haydarpasa port, while Italy and France planned demonstrations in major ports. C.H. Robinson warned of operational delays; experts said global trade impact should be limited though congestion could worsen at already busy terminals like Genoa.
