Douglas County Past: Safe-cracker caught, regatta draws crowd, streets No. 3 in nation

A telegram says John O’Donnell, also known as John O’Malley, is now in the custody of Detroit authorities pending disposition, after being wanted by Superior police for a string of robberies in early 1925. The notice links him to a break-in at the Palace Theater on Feb. 23, 1925, where a safe was opened after knocking off its knob, with $637 stolen. On Feb. 28, he was also accused of smashing the Martin Jewelry store display window and escaping with a tray of diamonds. He is further charged in multiple robberies from Jan. 1, 1924, to March 1, 1925. The paper also reports a 532-foot ore carrier, the Silver Bay, grounded in Lake Superior near Park Point and freed late Tuesday. Separately, the Lignell Rexall Drug Store at 1022 Tower Ave. has new ownership, and an estimated 2,000 to 2,500 people attended a regatta in Solon Springs.
