Dozens of dilapidated boats abandoned in Marina del Rey

Dozens of abandoned boats are accumulating—and in some cases sinking—in Marina del Rey, raising concerns for safety and the environment. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Harbor Operation Sgt. Time Gannon estimated that at least 40 boats are in impound, often because owners can’t afford upkeep or have debts tied to their slip fees. Capt. Sean McCarthy of the nonprofit Catalina Crew said the issue isn’t limited to the marina, calling it a state problem and noting that removal involves lien processing through the DMV. Gannon added budget cuts halved funding for the Surrendered and Abandoned Vessel Exchange, creating a backlog due to reliance on one contracted vendor. Catalina Crew plans to raise private funds to remove or recycle boats.
