Eastbourne RNLI welcomes fourth generation of same family
Eastbourne RNLI welcomes a fourth generation of the same family to the lifeboat station, keeping volunteer service in the Guy family for decades. Ellie Guy, 18, is joining Eastbourne RNLI to follow her great grandfather, grandfather and father, while her uncle has also worked with the charity for 20 years. The longest-serving member, grandfather Dick, recalled earlier crew alert methods, including maroons and station telephone calls. Dan Guy, Ellie’s father, began volunteering in 1996 at age 17 and now serves as Fleet Staff Coxswain after 30 years. In a 2002 call, a 33ft yacht ran into shallows in gale-force winds; during the rescue Dan stayed with the casualty despite being partially submerged himself and later received the Bronze Medal for Gallantry.
