Families mourn victims of Zimbabwe ferry disaster as death toll rises to 46

Families in Zimbabwe gathered Thursday in the fishing town of Kariba to mourn the victims of a deadly ferry accident on Lake Kariba. Police said the death toll has risen to 46 after the overloaded ferry capsized on Tuesday. At Nyamhunga Stadium, coffins were displayed under tents as mourners, including cabinet ministers, attended. Authorities have not released an official passenger count or how many remain missing. Estimates put passengers as high as 153, while the ferry’s capacity is listed as 90. The disaster management agency reported 77 rescues. Residents rely on the vessel because roads are damaged and public transport is scarce. President Emmerson Mnangagwa declared a state of disaster, citing deficiencies in maritime capabilities and ordering mobilization of resources for recovery.
