Fatalities, injuries reported at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta after 'incident' that sparked fire
Canadian officials confirmed fatalities and injuries after an incident sparked a major fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta, a busy Army training site. Defense Minister David McGuinty said the fire was still burning Saturday evening and offered few specifics, including that he could not immediately say how many people were killed or hurt. He added he couldn’t recall a similar incident in recent memory. The municipality of Wainwright said flames spread beyond the base perimeter into nearby areas, though local authorities reported no evacuation orders were issued. Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith both addressed the incident in posts on X. The Canadian Armed Forces, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), and local emergency personnel were responding, with federal agencies coordinating assistance with Alberta and municipal governments.
