Federal Grants for Seward Shipyard Operators - Alaska Business Magazine

Federal Maritime Administration grants totaling more than $2.3 million are set to upgrade operations at two Seward-area shipyard operators. Catalyst Marine Engineering will receive funding to buy advanced fabrication, welding, and material-handling equipment. JAG Alaska’s expansion will be supported through added rail-system capacity plus new carts and cradles to move vessels across the Seward Shipyard, with the broader goal of strengthening the port’s maritime capacity. MARAD Administrator Stephen M. Carmel said the investment supports Alaska’s working waterfronts. Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Kevin Lunday visited Seward to mark the upcoming homeporting of an icebreaker there. The Coast Guard Cutter Frederick Mann was commissioned in May and is temporarily homeported in Kodiak. Earlier this summer, Orion Construction won a roughly $9.8 million design-build contract for housing for Coast Guard efforts in Seward, and JAG Alaska secured a $100 million contract to overhaul a fisheries research vessel at the Ketchikan Shipyard.
