Fisheries Without Borders trains stakeholders on sustainable fisheries management amid climate threats

Fisheries Without Borders (FWB) held a capacity-building workshop focused on sustainable fisheries management amid climate threats. The training brought together fishermen, fish processors, community leaders and marine scientists at the Conference Hall of the National Fisheries Association of Ghana (NAFAG). It was part of a regional initiative involving Ghana, Nigeria and Benin, aiming to address declining fish stocks in the Gulf of Guinea through collaborative fisheries management. Participants from coastal communities across Ghana discussed fisheries co-management through training sessions, group discussions and practical exercises. The article notes that Ghana’s marine landings fell from about 900,000 tonnes to roughly 400,000 tonnes over the past three decades, putting pressure on food security and livelihoods. Professor F.K.E. Nunoo and Dr Angela Lamptey said effective co-management requires community understanding, accountability, shared responsibility and representation of women and young people. The workshop also covered rights-based approaches, climate resilience and the value of traditional knowledge.
