Fisherman reels in white shark off Massachusetts, then snags the hook from its toothy mouth
On June 7, Nantucket saw a near nine-foot white shark reeled in by Elliot Sudal, a veteran angler and boat captain. White sharks are protected and must be released when caught. Sudal climbed onto the back of the shark, secured it in the surf, and removed the hook within seconds to set it free.
Sudal posted the footage online, noting the release took about 15 seconds and that the shark was back in the water. The NOAA has previously investigated Sudal for handling a smalltooth sawfish in 2017 and sent him a safety letter in 2018; white sharks are not listed under the Endangered Species Act but receive federal protections, while the IUCN deems them vulnerable. Scientists have noted rising sightings off New England linked to growing seal populations.
