Captain Alejandro Abuin Prado says a “miscommunication” is believed to have contributed to the grounding of the Spanish-owned, UK-flagged longliner Genesis near the Old Man of Hoy, off the west coast of Hoy. All 17 people on board were airlifted to safety in a multi-agency operation launched after a Mayday call shortly after 6:30am. The 30-metre vessel was reportedly heading to Scrabster with 28 tonnes of fish when it struck rocks. Prado thanked RNLI Stromness lifeboat crew, HM Coastguard helicopters from Sumburgh and Stornoway, and Kirkwall and St Margaret’s Hope Coastguard Rescue Teams. There were no injuries, and the crew were taken to a hotel.
