Fishing & outdoor world - Territory FM 104.1 highlights how Darwin’s longest-established specialist fishing and tackle store has evolved since opening in 1972. The business began as Stringer’s Fishing and Outdoor World when Col Stringer and George Voukolos opened a small shop on Cavenagh Street next to the RSL building to serve growing angler demand. After Cyclone Tracey devastated Darwin in Christmas 1974, Stringer and Voukolos supported homeless families with camping gear, clothing, gas stoves and other essentials. Stringer later moved interstate, while Voukolos stayed to expand the company into Fishing and Outdoor World Pty Limited. Over 32 years, it has helped introduce “Nilsmaster” and other lures to the Northern Territory, supported local tourism and promoted fishing guides, and provided advice on catching barramundi at competitive prices.
