Fugitive on run for 20 years

A fugitive doctor who had avoided a rape trial for more than 20 years was captured after being located living aboard a sailboat off the U.S. coast, U.S. Marshals said. Ronald L. Fischer, 70, was arrested on Thursday after investigators received new information and tracked him to the 56-foot vessel “The Silver Lining” near the New York–New Jersey coastline. Agents working with the FBI intercepted the boat about an hour offshore and took Fischer into custody without incident. He was arrested on a U.S. Marshals Service warrant for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution and was transported by a U.S. Coast Guard vessel to Coast Guard Station Staten Island, where custody was transferred to local law enforcement. Officials said Fischer operated the sailboat under the alias Richard Graydon. During a search of his residence, prosecutors told NBC News New York that law enforcement found books about evading police and evidence he used an “onion router” to conceal IP addresses.
