Full updated list of banned names that cannot be used on UK passports

The UK Passport Office has updated guidance on name restrictions, urging travelers to verify their details before applying. The updated rules, announced earlier this summer, clarify that a name accepted at birth registration may still be rejected for passport issuance. The changes explain when applications could be refused or when names may need adjustment due to potential offensiveness or technical problems with the Passport Office’s computer systems. The guidance covers names considered offensive—such as swear words, sexually explicit references, and vulgar language—as well as names linked to criminal gangs, extremist groups, or incitement to crime or hatred. It also lists technical triggers under International Civil Aviation Organisation standards, including numbers, most symbols and punctuation, diacritical marks, and overly long forenames or surnames. Numbers must be spelled out if they appear on birth certificates.
