General Staff: Russia has lost 1,391,950 troops in Ukraine since Feb. 24, 2022
Russia has lost about 1,391,950 troops in Ukraine since the start of its full-scale invasion on Feb. 24, 2022, according to a June 21 update from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The figure includes 1,290 casualties Russian forces suffered over the past day. Ukraine’s General Staff did not publish its own losses, citing operational secrecy. It also reported Russian losses across equipment categories, including 12,049 tanks, 24,797 armored combat vehicles, 44,479 artillery systems, and 436 aircraft, along with 33 ships and boats. Independent Western think tanks broadly agree Russia’s casualties exceed Ukraine’s, with CSIS estimating a roughly 2.5:1 to 2:1 ratio. A January 2026 CSIS report suggests Ukraine likely suffered 500,000–600,000 casualties from Feb. 2022 to Dec. 2025, including 100,000–140,000 killed in action.
