Philipp Lahm stood as Germany’s 2014 World Cup captain, starting every match and playing every minute. The midfielder-turned-right-back shifted from defensive midfield in the group stage to the backline in the knockout rounds, shaping the defense for a title run that included two assists in the semifinal against Brazil and a clean sheet in the opener vs. Portugal. After the final, Lahm continued to captain Bayern Munich for three more seasons, adding Bundesliga titles, a Pokal, and a Supercup before retiring in 2017 and being inducted into Bayern’s Hall of Fame.
