Graeme Souness predicts how long Virgil van Dijk has left at Liverpool, 'he's got better'

Graeme Souness says Liverpool should move quickly to secure Virgil van Dijk’s future, warning that the captain could be entering the final stretch of his contract. Souness points to earlier negotiations that dragged on until mid-April in a previous cycle, when Van Dijk agreed new terms in 2025 just two months before his deal ended. He urges a more decisive approach this time, arguing Van Dijk remains crucial for Andoni Iraola’s side. Speaking to The Mirror, the former Liverpool captain suggested a one-year extension with an option for a second season, saying he believes the 35-year-old has “definitely another year” and that Van Dijk has “got better” over time. Souness also defended him after criticism following an injury sustained against Everton goalkeeper Pickford.
