Heroes reveal horror they saw as they dragged boaters from ocean near Alcatraz — rescuers described a chaotic scene after a commercial cruiser sank in San Francisco Bay near Alcatraz on Tuesday. Two commercial fishermen, Mike Montoya and Justin Marceline, said victims banged on windows and attempted to stay alive as they were pulled from the water. The San Francisco Police Department said one person died and three remain missing out of 20 aboard the 49-foot cabin cruiser Volare, while a dog also died. The Coast Guard and San Francisco Fire Department continued searching using thermal imaging, tide prediction, and modeling. Authorities saved 17 people; one later died after life-saving measures, and three others were hospitalized. The vessel was reported about 600 yards off Alcatraz between the island and the Golden Gate Bridge. The cause remains unknown.
