Hotel owner fined £120,000 over safety failures after Grimsby boy's tragic death
A hotel operator has been fined £120,000 after safety failures connected to dangerous electrical installations were found following the death of 10-year-old Jack Piper-Sheach. Y7 Hotels Ltd, which admitted breaches under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, was charged by Blackpool Council after the incident at Tiffany’s Hotel on the Promenade in Blackpool. Jack was found unresponsive shortly before 11pm on Sunday, September 3, 2023, after suffering serious injuries consistent with a high-voltage electric shock; he died four days later at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool. Lancashire Police found no criminal case to answer regarding the death. The sentencing on Friday, June 26, ordered a £120,000 fine and £24,000 costs. Investigators said remedial work from a 2020 electrical installation condition report lacked documentation and was not carried out by a competent, qualified electrician. A subsequent Improvement Notice led to a satisfactory EICR in November 2023 after further HSE inspections.
