Issues Statement on OSCE Montenegro Report, June '26
A UK statement on an OSCE Montenegro report in June 2026 reaffirmed London’s support for Montenegro’s Euro-Atlantic path and for efforts to strengthen democratic institutions. Deputy Ambassador James Ford welcomed the Mission’s work aligned with national strategic objectives, ahead of a planned transition to national ownership of OSCE functions by the end of 2027. The statement praised progress on strengthening the rule of law, enhancing judicial independence and tackling corruption, alongside Montenegro’s openness to partnership and dialogue, including with civil society. It also noted Montenegro’s principled stance in response to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. The UK highlighted priority areas for the OSCE Mission: improving the functioning and transparency of Montenegro’s parliament, supporting authorities against serious and organised crime, and backing media freedom and journalists’ safety. It said Montenegro’s request for the 2027 transition reflects success over the Mission’s last 20 years and emphasized engagement for a smooth handover.
